The Bible

By Adrian Jantzi

We believe in the inerrancy and final authority of Scripture. We consider it our foundation and actively seek to apply its teachings in our daily lives. We want to be a people transformed by the Word, not just informed. Our teaching is based in and aligned with Scripture.

When I first walked into New Frontiers church on a Sunday morning there were two things that left a lasting impression on me. First was the community I experienced, not only the friendliness on the day, but also being invited into the New Frontiers community outside of a Sunday morning. The second, was how instrumental Scripture was, not only in the sermon but in how the whole service was run. Prior to New Frontiers, I had never experienced a church which embraced the gift of the Spirit and expected Him to play such an active role in the Sunday service. However, I was able to feel completely at peace with this new experience because it was evident how the church was working to align with Scripture in how the gifts of the Spirit were to be applied in a Sunday gathering. This was New Frontiers living out the value of the Bible, applying its teachings, and being transformed by the Word.

To say we value the Bible and that it matters might seem obvious, but I would challenge you to think about what a church would look like that didn’t value the Bible. We believe in the inerrancy and final authority of Scripture, a church that doesn’t do this could be influenced by anyone's thoughts, opinions, culture or politics. Scripture having final authority means we look at all things through the lens of Scripture to derive what is true and how we should act. Otherwise, we could be at risk of looking at the Bible through the lens of our own thoughts, opinions, culture and politics, seeing what we want to see in Scripture rather than letting it inform us how to view these things.

I would challenge you to think about what a church would look like that didn’t value the Bible.

Valuing the Bible is one way we are able to avoid what Paul mentioned in Ephesians 4, being “tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” We are able to navigate through every wind of teaching and craftiness of people because we stand in the inerrancy and final authority of Scripture. We have the Bible to lean on, with which we are able to correctly weigh out each teaching or comment and know if it is true; does it align with Scripture?

How often have you heard something, or read in a book, or seen on the internet something that is presented with Biblical authority but just didn’t sit right with you? In our world today we so often hear folks speak with authority, even claiming the authority of God or Scripture, yet are saying things that are antithetical to who God has revealed himself to be in the Bible and what the Bible asks of us. The only way to truly know who God is and who we are to be in Him is through Scripture. We cannot rely on the culture, our feelings, or social media comment warriors to reveal God to us. It is only through the Bible that we get the true and full picture of who God is and how we should live our lives. If we are not grounded in Scripture; the culture, our feelings and social media, will be the waves we are tossed back and forth in and our view of God will be unclear.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Matthew 7:24

At New Frontiers we see the value of the Bible lived out in how we deal with topics of the day. When we’ve looked at topics of Women in Leadership, Church and Politics, and Human Sexuality, we dove into Scripture and sought to see what God has to say about these things in his Word. It is only by relying on the Bible and seeking God’s heart revealed in Scripture that we are able to come to a conclusion on these topics and stand firm in those decisions. If there is disagreement we can always point back to the Biblical basis for the positions we take and explain that, in whatever decision we make, we are seeking to align ourselves with the heart of God revealed in Scripture.

Our values state that we seek to be transformed by the Word and apply its teachings to our daily lives. This was emphasized by Jesus in Matthew 7:24–27 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” We seek to not just hear Jesus’ words but put them into practice. And in doing so we are able to stand firm in the truth, our house is able to stand when buffeted by wind and the storms.
