Apologetics Class: Science and Religion in Dialogue

Leader: Chris Harper

Date/Time: Thursdays, 7.00pm, beginning October 3

Location: NFC Building, 1 Gosling Road, Portsmouth

Description: This class will address the question: Are the ancient texts of the Bible compatible with the discoveries of modern science? Our goal is to look at ten Biblical texts to have a meaningful discussion of the truths inherent in both science and religion.

In conjunction with each one of these biblical texts, we will consider issues of interest to modern scientists and anthropologists. Discussion will focus on the origin of the universe; the origin and formation of the planet earth; the origin of life and humankind; human rights and human wrongs; the evidence for a great flood; the nature and cause of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions together with their associated tidal waves (tsunamis); the nature of the star of Bethlehem associated with the birth of Jesus; and finally, considering particularly the 21stCentury, we will address the growing concerns about the end of the world as we know it – climate change and mass extinction.

Vocational Training Group

Leaders: Jay & Emily Lawrence

Date/Time: Thursdays, 7.00pm

Location: Rollinsford

Description: This 7-week class using guided material has been designed to equip people to have a better relationship with and understanding of their vocational life. We will do this through completing a set of collaborative self-assessments of both your current vocational health, your desired future of your vocational health, and putting a tailored action plan in place to get you to where you want to go.

Though we'll discuss how God and His Kingdom interacts with the world through vocation, this is not exclusively for Christians; this will be intensely practical for Christians and non-Christians alike. Please do bring any family, friends and neighbors who you've talked to about jobs in the past. The more we have the better!

Spanish Conversation Group

Date/Time: Bi-weekly on Wednesdays, 7.00pm

Location: Portsmouth Area

Description: As part of our multicultural family of churches we want to be able to communicate with our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters. The goal of this group is to converse in Spanish, with grace for any mistakes we may be making as we speak!  Participants should be able to hold a basic conversation in Spanish.  Meetings may include: yummy snacks/food, discussion of different topics/movies, and more!  A lot of this group will be guided by the people who are in it and what they want to discuss/talk about.  The group will be capped at 10 people.

Fishing Group

Leader: Alex Grammatic

Date/Time: Bi-weekly depending on group members (early mornings & evenings)

Location: Varied, but within 30 minutes of Dover

Description: The goal is to gather a group of people that enjoy an age-old hobby to build relationships with each other as well as others that aren't connected to a church. Being a fisherman was a common vocation in Jesus' time and disconnecting from technology, throwing some bait in the water, and waiting is a great way to spend some quality time with others. We hope to eat what we catch (mostly, I have some standards) and try some of my favorite spots as well as new ones I have been wanting to try. Maximum group size is 6. Group members must purchase fishing license (fresh and salt).  Experience/tackle helpful but not needed.

Responsibility for the preparation of food and beverages will be shared by the group. So many flavors and textures, so little time!  We will gather in a relaxed, open, and interactive environment and will try to change up the format as we go. Bring your appetite. Yemek yemek!

“Places Everyone”

Leaders: David & Carla Rogers

Date/Time: One Friday per month - Theatre, 6.45pm – 10.30pm

One Wednesday per month – Prayer

Other activities – As needed

Location: Portsmouth

“Places Everyone!” is a special interest group for those who love the theater and have a heart for the people of the theatre arts community in the Seacoast. Whether your PLACE is handing out programs, seating patrons, striking stage sets or cleaning toilets – you have a ROLE to play in helping us to serve The Seacoast Repertory Theater in downtown Portsmouth. Our desire is to serve The Rep excellently on a regular basis by volunteering to usher, clean, distribute flyers and other activities to be determined. We will be at the theatre at least twice a month to serve in whatever way is needed. We will usher once a month on a Friday night and organize groups when the theater needs help with strike and the cleaning needed during show transitions.  We will also meet once a month to pray together at our house in Portsmouth. As we grow in experience, relationships and understanding of the needs of The Rep, we hope that our opportunities to serve will increase and become more varied.
